Journey Together supports young people in Oxford through small-group youth work and early intervention. Focusing on those who are not in crisis but not yet thriving, our youth work practice is shaped by our ethos: we believe that there is something of unique and wonderful value in each young person we work with, and we want young people to feel known and accepted as they are.
While Journey Together is an emerging charity, our lead youth worker brings 20 years of youth work experience. Working with young people, we have developed programs to help build confidence, self-esteem, social skills, and resilience. We work with young people to create small-group communities where they can build healthy friendships and gain a sense of agency. By fostering communication skills and engagement with education, we aim to improve wellbeing, encourage positive choices, and support young people to flourish both in school and beyond.
Social & personal development courses in schools
With enthusiastic participation from young people and a warm response from school pastoral staff, our short courses have a supportive impact on young people’s engagement in school. We focus on young people in Key Stage 3, to help support and build on a positive transition into secondary school. book club
This group provides space to share a love of story and creativity, and support growth in social confidence and wellbeing. Their creative works are often incredibly varied; short and funny, sweet and whimsical, philosophical and even graphic novel excerpts.
We hold planning meetings at the start of the year, encouraging the young people to put forward proposals for the coming year and then combining everyone’s best ideas. We strongly suspect that this practice, combined with the supportive group culture, contributed to increases in young people feeling confident sharing their ideas and suggestions. Young people have also reflected on increases in their abilities to try new things and meet new people, which we believe is linked to feeling safe in the space, and able to be themselves. Young people have repeatedly identified that having a safe space to be yourself is absolutely foundational to an increase in confidence, which feeds into other areas of life.
TBK (To Be Known)
TBA is a community of young people exploring the Christian way of life. Every September the group reconvene and plan for the coming year. This group packs a lot into one meeting a month through the academic year; the depth of relationship, their honesty and willingness to explore a wide a breadth of subject matter, their joy in each other and their open curiosity in exploring faith and learning more about God and how they can make a positive impact on the world around them.
